Detoxing From Drugs
Anyone that has gone through the process of detoxing from drugs or has had a friend or family member suffer through this knows how terribly hard and sad it can be. There are treatment options available to help you through the detox process or you can try to quit cold turkey, either which require all of the support you can get from friends and family.
The first and hardest step that you will have to take is admitting that you have a problem and asking for help. Then you can start looking at your treatment options. You may want to speak with a health care professional before making any decisions on how and where to begin your detox process. It may be best to enter an drug rehab to receive the best care possible. This will also eliminate the chance of giving up and going to find more drugs to take away your pain. There will also be counselors on staff who can help you with any anxiety or depression that you may be feeling.
If inpatient or outpatient rehab is not an option for you for any reason and you must try detoxing from drugs on your own, then you might want to make a trip to your local pharmacy before attempting the difficult task at hand. Be sure to stock up on anti-diarrhea medication, some over the counter pain killers, and anti-nausea medicine. A box of tissues would not hurt either, because many people experience a very runny nose during withdrawal. You probably won’t want any food at this point yet because it will be hard for to hold anything down and it is very doubtful that you will have an appetite of any kind. But you MUST drink plenty of liquids so that you do not become dehydrated. Sports drinks that contain electrolytes will work the best for you. If you find yourself continuously throwing up any liquids that you do drink, you need to get to the hospital so that they can treat you for dehydration.
Withdrawal symptoms from detoxing can range from diarrhea, migraine headaches, vomiting, sweating, severe pain throughout your entire body and extreme fatigue. It may be weeks before you can even get out of bed. The first few days of withdrawal are the most severe. It is the fatigue and general loss of all interests that will keep you in bed for the next few weeks. Reading a good book or working a crossword puzzle is a good way to keep your mind off of the symptoms you are experiencing.
Friends and family may not be what you want in the beginning. Most likely you will just want to be left alone. But when you start feeling a little better it will be great to have their support. Don’t shut them out! They love you and want to see you leading a healthier and more productive lifestyle. Hopefully they will be there to help you through to the end and see you begin your new and improved life of sobriety!
In addition to treatment, an after care program such as sober living is often a good idea. These sober living halfway houses often parallel strong involvement with a 12 step program.
